Fussy Footnotes?

Footnotes sometimes seem to have a mind of their own. Despite your orders for them to remain on a single page, they sometimes split themselves across two or more pages. And sometimes they jump to a page other than the one on which they belong. If this happens to you, check the following:

  1. That any line spacing, font size changes, or paragraph spacing in the main text have been applied using styles rather than direct formatting.
  2. That spacing between paragraphs in the main text is accomplished using Above and Below Paragraph Spacing in the Style, NOT by pressing ENTER and adding a paragraph mark between paragraphs.
  3. That there are no directly apply formatting changes (particularly font size, paragraph and line spacing) to the footnote text.
NOTE: If you need to change the format of the footnote text, modify the Footnote Text style.

EMERGENCY HELP: For a quick “got to get it out now” fix - if there are multiple paragraphs in the footnote text, use manual line breaks (CTRL+ENTER) rather than paragraph marks (ENTER) to separate them. This way the footnote text looks as though it is several paragraphs but Word thinks of it as one big paragraph.
